Euro Firefighter - CFBT & Fire Tactics Book
Paul Grimwood's experiences from 35 years of international firefighting in Europe and the USA are brought together in this new training manual. The ex London & New York firefighter is as controversial as ever, telling it like it really is!  www.euro-firefighter.com

From hotel and apartment fires in London's vibrant but diverse west-end district, to tenement fires in the ghettos of New York City in the 1970s. In this his third book, he explores firefighting strategy & tactics from a truly international perspective and proposes several ways to combine some of the most effective tactical approaches from Europe and the USA ....

'The South Bronx was the epitome of poverty, deprivation and decay during the late 1960s-1970s. Many have tried to convey the period, the area, the situation, the mood, the atmosphere and the people through words and pictures. However, one thing is certain, you really had to be there to see it for yourself, to believe how a city as large and influential in worldly affairs as New York could ignore such a tragedy within its own backyard'.

'Each night shift in the South Bronx was busy beyond belief and brought periods of constant fire action where there were rarely any engine companies available. Anything from abandoned cars, to street and yard rubbish, to false alarms where kids would ‘pull’ the street corner alarm boxes on hot summer evenings just for fun, the calls were constant. There was also a lot of death and destruction in this area. The tenement blocks were vast and very closely spaced. They had certain construction features that caused fires to spread and develop very quickly'.

Included in the book is a complete training manual for CFBT Fire Behaviour Instructors based on the new 2007 EdExcel syllabus -

When ISO steel shipping containers are lined with solid fuels (chip-board or wood for example) and used for live fire training, it is essential to consider the following -

  • What fuel types should be used?

  • How much fuel should be loaded?

  • How big should the vents be?

  • How should vents and doors be used to influence fire growth?

  • Solid fuels can produce two types of fire (gas/fuel phase)

  • Is the fire you are producing a gas-phase or fuel-phase fire?

  • How will the same flow-rate perform against both types of fire?

  • What are the objectives of using a fuel-phase fire?

  • How might this affect your extinguishing methods?

  • What dangers are associated with fuel-phase fires inside containers?

  • What dangers are associated with gas-phase fires inside containers?
